Rear-Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort (1774-1857) is credited with devising the first standardized empirical scale that relates wind speed to observed conditions at sea or on land. His wind-force scale categories are now commonly-rendered in units of meters per second (m/s) or kilometers per hour (km/h).
