Scientists needed a massive block of clear ice in order to detect neutrinos, which reach the earth from nuclear reactions, usually from the center of the Sun. Because the mass of neutrinos is almost zero, all but one in a million pass through such a block without leaving a trace. But when that millionth particle hits an elementary quark particle, it makes a flash of light in the ice.
