In recent years, significant advancements have been made in developing new aluminium alloys which can replace parts that, up until now, were made of ferrous metal. Also, aluminium is increasingly used as a matrix material for metal/ceramic ;' composites that combine the hardness and wear resistance of ceramics with the lightweight and flexibility of aluminium, Most manufacturers are turning to new and advanced production technologies to keep up with these developments. It is not an exaggeration, however, to say that most metallographic quality control facilities in the aluminium industry have not been brought up-to-date to produce good .quality micro specimens for optical observation in a reasonable amount of time.
