Laser processing of materials has been extensively applied in many different industries due to the versatility encountered in the laser treatment of materials and the wide spectrum of applications to which lasers can be applied. For instance, the applications of lasers could be for surface functionalization to improve the biocompatibility of metallic implants; or for the modification of surface tribology characteristics in case of lubricated surfaces. Furthermore, laser machining for micromanufacturing tasks can be considered as one of the most important application sectors.
