National Transportation Safety Board Cautions PHMSA and Transport Canada Over Too Long Phase-In of Safer Oil/Liquids- Bearing Rail Cars

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) on April 3 offered up some safety recommendations regarding crude oil transportation by rail and urged the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) to take action on them. The NTSB believes that available thermal protection systems, such as jacketed ceramic blankets that are approved for use on tank cars used to transport liquefied petroleum gas, have the capability to provide the protection that significantly exceeds the existing performance standard when used on flammable liquids tank cars.
