Beware the Hallucal Interphalangeal Joint Sesamoid in First Metatarsophalangeal Joint Arthrodesis

To report the clinical complications in arthrodesis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTP1) due to the hallucal interphalangeal joint sesamoid (HIPJS) Group I: Following 438 MTP1 arthrodeses performed from 2005 to 2017, 12 feet developed painful keratoma beneath a gradually-hyperextending interphalangeal (IP) joint of the great toe at an average of 28 months. Proper MTP1 fusion was established through examination of the patient and evaluation of photographs. The angle subtended by the proximal phalanx of the arthrodesed great toe with the ground, pre- and postoperative extension angles at the IPJ1, and the angle between the first metatarsal and the proximal phalanx of the arthrodesed big toe, were measured.
