To compare and determine the effectiveness of topical oxygen therapy to treat patients with non-healing diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) versus standard best practice. In this randomized control trial, 20 patients were recruited after consulting with a multi-disciplinary team of plastic and vascular surgeons, as per the inclusion criteria laid down for the study. The study population was randomized into two groups of ten patients each: the standard care group (non-placebo control group) and the standard care plus oxygen therapy group. Patients in both groups were matched for age and other characteristics like hypertension, Hbalc and ankle-brachial index (ABI) values, wound surface area and the mean duration of the wound. The standard care included full medical assessment, surgical interventions if needed, local treatments such as sharp debridement, antimicrobial/iodine dressings and offloading standard care such as removable cast walkers for forefoot ulcers. The topical oxygen group received the standard care and topical oxygen using The Natrox Oxygen Delivery System (Inotec AMD, Burlington, ON, Canada).
