Ethical Issues in Anesthesia Practice-When Should We Say No?

Anesthesiologists encounter ethical dilemmas in all phases of their medical practice. Many of the dilemmas are addressed in the Guidelines for the Ethical Practice of Anesthesiology (see the Appendix at the end of the chapter) published by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA).1 The ASA supports a very active Committee on Ethics, which meets twice annually to consider current ethical issues, to make recommendations to the ASA Board of Directors and House of Delegates, and to develop educational programs.
