COURTING DANGER: INTERPRETING SUBLIME LANDSCAPE IN A SCOTTISH WILDERNESS GARDEN

The Hermitage wilderness garden near Dunkeld in Perthshire, Scotland, was created in the 1750s by John Murray of Strowan, later 3rd Duke of Atholl. This seminal example of Sublime landscape design has been much written about from its inception onwards. Yet, a great deal of detailed new evidence has been emerging from more than a decade of documentary research, archaeological excavation, landscape survey and historic building analysis undertaken by the National Trust for Scotland. This paper presentsthis new material and explores in detail the sophisticated manipulation of the visitor's engagement with the landscape, designed to create a highly emotive encounter which in some cases pushes the concept of the Sublime to its limits.
