Protecting Environmental Human Rights in Armed Conflict Situations

Over the past half century or more, the continuing degradation of the environment has become one of the most serious problems facing humankind. Across its many facets (loss of biodiversity, deforestation, desertification, environmental pollution, climate change etc.), there appear to be some consistent causative elements, arising out of the excessive environmental stress imposed by anthropogenic factors,1 which can trigger long-lasting and potentially irreversible catastrophic consequences such as the complete loss or destruction of specific elements of ecosystems, disrupting their delicate ecological balance.
