U.S. Production Capability and Imports

Production - U.S. crude steel production rose 9.6% to 5.98 million tons in July 2020, the highest month-on-month increase since the coronavirus lockdown of this spring. Capacity utilization was up, too, increasing to 60.3%, the highest it has been since April (Fig. 1). However, production remained down on a yearly basis. In July 2019, U.S. mills produced 8.18 million tons of crude steel and were using 79.4% of their capacity.
