Surge in stainless steel imports from Indonesia pose serious threat to domestic industry

Indian Stainless-Steel Development Association (ISSDA) has raised concerns that exporters of stainless steel in several countries are colluding with some Indian importers to misuse the provisions of Indian-ASEAN FTA rules. Import of stainless steel from Indonesia into India has grown from nearly 8,000 tonnes in 2017-18 to 67,000 tonnes in 2018-19 (annualized basis), with Chinese producers ramping up capacity in Indonesia, according to ISSDA. ISSDA has highlighted widespread mis-declarations by exporters from ASEAN countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam to avail preferential tariff under the FTA, to the Government of India.
