Indian cement producers exempt from coke ban

India’s Supreme Court today exempted the cement industry from a ban on petroleum coke in parts of northern India, supporting demand for domestic coke. But imported coke demand is still in question, as the government considers banning imports. In a hearing today that covered a broad range of emissions control issues, the court asked the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to amend a November order to allow cement companies in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan to burn coke in their kilns. The ministry had issued the directive on 15 November, following a ruling by the court in late October requiring the ban. The ministry has four weeks to amend its order.
