California adopts new emissions rules for ports

The California Air Resources Board (ARB) on 27 August unani-mously approved new emission restrictions governing ocean-going vessels berthed at state ports. The new regulations, approved by a 14-0 vote, will cover a wider variety of ships and accelerate reductions of NOx, par-ticulate matter and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to earlier rules adopted by California in 2007 and 2014. ARB says the new regulation will reduce emissions from additional 2,300 annual visits by container ships, reefer and cruise vessel feets by 90pc when it is fully implemented at the some of the world's busiest ports in Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oakland, San Francisco, San Diego and Hueneme.
