In 2018, the US trade deficit with China soared 18.8% to a 10-year high of $621 billion, despite Trump administration's imposition on tariffs on a range of imported goods from China. The deficit last year was the largest in a decade. President Trump has attempted to bridge the gap with a protectionist trade policy, which they say is required to shield US manufacturers from what they deem to be "unfair'' foreign competition. The US levied tariffs on $250 billion worth of goods imported from China, leading to Beijing retaliating by imposing duties on $ 11 billion worth of American products. Trump has threatened another $200 billion of tariffs on Chinese imports.
