The European Parliament's International Trade Committee is considering a motion that would ask the Council of the EU - representing the EU's 28 member states - to reject negotiating mandates it is considering that would allow the European Commission to formally launch trade talks with the United States. The European Commission submitted two draft mandates to the Council last month. If approved by the member states, the mandates would permit the Commission to enter into negotiations on a deal on industrial goods and conformity assessments with the U.S. The negotiating mandates need the unanimous support of the Council to be approved. The European Parliament would have to approve a trade deal before it could be implemented, but does not have to approve its launch.
