After two days of meetings and events with President Trump, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the U.S. and India had agreed to initiate talks on a "bigger deal" after a limited trade arrangement did not come to fruition during the president's visit to India this week. Talks on a limited deal that addresses Indian price controls on medical devices, as well as agricultural market access and non-tariff barriers for certain products, among other issues, began in earnest last year after the Trump administration revoked India's benefits under the Generalized System of Preferences. An announcement of a completed deal had been expected during the trip, though U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer canceled plans to travel to India before Trump to finalize it and did not accompany the president this week. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and other U.S. officials did.
