Evaluation of First Trimester Bleeding by USG

Objective: This study was undertaken to find out the role of ultrasonography in diagnosing first trimester bleeding. Method: One hundred and fifty women with the complain of bleeding per vaginum in the first twelve weeks of pregnancy were studied. Clinical Diagnosis and Ultrasound Diagnosis were recorded for evaluation at the end of the study period. Result: Clinical diagnosis of threatened abortion was made in 123 cases but on Ultrasonographic examination a diagnosis of threatened abortion was made in 115 cases with a discrepancy of 8 cases. The second commonest reason for bleeding per vaginum as diagnosed clinically was 21 cases with incomplete abortion. On Ultrasonography the same diagnosis was made in 15 cases with a discrepancy of 6 cases. Threatened abortion and incomplete abortion was clinically over diagnosed and missed abortion, inevitable abortion and molar pregnancy was under diagnosed. Conclusion: History and clinical examination is not enough to make an accurate diagnosis in many cases. Ultrasound is non invasive, quite safe and highly accurate in diagnosing the cause of bleeding per vagina.
