INTRODUCTION: Colors used to code information should be legible, recognizable, and distinguishable from one another. Designing a palette that meets these criteria is especially challenging if the users include people with color-vision deficiencies (CVDs). PURPOSE: Develop a candidate color-coding palette, suitable for color-normal and CVD air traffic controllers (ATCs), for testing in a subsequent formal experiment. The palette contains foreground colors for coding symbols and alphanumerics, plus background colors for coding weather severity.
