This study was conducted to determine the effect of organic Se from Se-enriched alga (Chlorella spp.) and Se-enriched yeast on serum and tissue Se, serum GSH-Px activities and carcass characteristics of finishing pigs. The pigs in groups I (n=12), II (n=12), III (n=12) and IV (n=11) were fed with diets supplemented with inorganic sodium selenite, organic Se from Se-enriched yeast, organic Se from Se-enriched alga and control basal diet, respectively, for three months. Results revealed that the organic Se sources did not significantly affect the serum Se and serum GSH-Px activities. There were significantly higher Se concentrations in the muscle (P<0.01) and heart (P<0.01) of pigs fed with Se-enriched yeast when compared with pigs fed Se-enriched alga Chlorella spp. The Se content in the liver and ovaries were not significantly different between the two organic Se sources. It was observed that the Se concentration in the muscle tissue of pigs fed organic sources were higher than inorganic form. There were no significant differences observed in the carcass quality of supplemented groups. It is concluded that Se from Se-enriched alga, Chlorella spp. accumulates less in the muscle tissue than Se from Se-enriched yeast without negative impact on meat quality.
