The Human papillomavirus (HPV) has become a prominent risk factor for the development of multiple types of cancer and is the primary driver of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) in the United States. The incidence of HPV-positive oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma was thought to be under 20% in the 1980s, and now may be as high as 85% to 90% with increases in each successive birth cohort.1""3 Determination of HPV status in oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma is important for risk stratification and staging, as HPV-driven carcinoma has a unique biology with improved survival, which is independent of treatment modality.4 This association has led to clinical trials looking at deintensification of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, and may eventually lead to modified HPV-targeted regimens with reduced morbidity, further highlighting the importance of determining HPV status.
