BY THE END of the 1999 racing season and start of the 21st Century, Appaloosas had competed in 26,896 pari-mutuel and approved non-pari-mutuel races. That's 26K-plus race winners, and an even far greater number of Appaloosas running on tracks throughout the country as the 20th Century came to a close. While we know that many of those Appaloosa raced more than one season and were multiple winners, the sheer number of mommas producing all the entries and winners has to number in the thousands. Many ofthose mommas were themselves outstanding racehorses, legends in their own right, who had yet to produce any babies. Once retired to broodmare status, some of these moms became even more famous for the successes of their offspring. Although we don't knowthe total number of Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse and Appaloosa moms producing babies, much less outstanding racehorses, we do know that mares of these other breeds foaled winners, some of whom became legends.
