Woodside buys to prevent Lukoil Senegal Sangomar deal

Woodside Petroleum will pay up to US $400m to prevent Russia's Lukoil from buying into its Sangomar project off Senegal but will look to sell down its stake over the next year.Only the week before Woodside boss Peter Coleman said the firm was"primed"for M&A opportunities and it has now pre-empted Lukoil's deal to buy out Cairn Energy's 40%.Woodside said it wanted to protect shareholders'interests by removing the potential uncertainty of US sanctions applying to the Sangomar project because of Lukoil's involvement.
