Statoil awards contract for Tanzania deep wildcat

Statoil will spud a new deepwater wildcat off Tanzania next quarter after awarding the drilling contract to Ocean Rig. The company is operator of Block 2 in an alliance with ExxonMobil and has made eight discoveries from the 13 wells drilled so far. It will use the Ocean Rig Poseidon for the one commitment well early in 2018. The Norwegian firm has used the drillship previously off Tanzania where it has around 22 Tcf of reserves. Statoil's last well was Mdalasini in April 2015 but the company then decided to take an exploration break to "evaluate the next steps and mature new prospects".
