摘要

Severe brain injury is a leading cause of death and disability. Improvements in intensive care have increased survival rates following severe brain injury, but outcome is highly variable. Following a period of coma, some patients make a good recovery, while others progress into a vegetative or minimally consciousness state. Diagnosis is difficult and errors in diagnosis occur often. Discordance between standardized behavioral diagnosis and consensus diagnosis could be as high as 40%, and this can negatively impact quality of care (Seel et al. 2010).
