Representation of Academic Library Space as Interest Contestation

This paper is a mini research which is a part of the author’s dissertation. The purpose was to explain representation of space in UGM Library. The approach was ethnographic method, then data was collected by observation and interview. The concept of representation of space isnormative space, ideal space, conceptual space previously formulated and conceptualized by architect and designer. Data analysis used Lefebvre’s theory (1991) on representation of space. The mini research found that UGM Library spaces didn’t develop on their own, but moved by actors.It meant there was interest contestation of interest in the management of spaces in UGM Library. In the context of the present study, space development in UGM Library was influenced by various interests such as: accreditation, three principles of higher education, standardization, capitalowner, McDonaldization, and dynamicization of space. Pragmatically, there was dynamic transformation and paradox on ideal space representation previously conceptualized by designer.
