Reducing Urban Sprawl Developments Through Organized Community-Based Housing Development: A Perspective

The challenges to regulate development of Semarang has become more complex than before. One of the challenges is the effort to fulfill the need of houses. In 2011, the percentage of population growth in Semarang due to migration has risen to 2.24%.1 The rate of urbanization in Semaranghas led the expansion of residential area to the suburbs. If it is not regulated properly, it will carry of what is known as urban sprawl. Based on medium-term development plan (RPJM) of Semarang in 2010, the pattern of the spatial structure of Semarang is scattered, not compact. This articletries to offer a concept of minimizing the phenomenon of urban sprawl development with neighborhood development concept through organized community-based development approach, specifically the study regarding the development of small-scale land for formal housing and the incremental land acquisitionfor informal self-help housing. The object of the study is in Ngaliyan Sub district, Semarang.
