Psychometric validation of the 14-item perceived stress scale in Chinese medical residents

This study aimed to validate a Simplified Chinese version of the 14-item Perceived Stress Scale (CPSS-14) for use with Chinese population and clarify its reliability and validity. A sample of 835 Chinese medical residents were asked to complete the CPSS-14, Zung Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), and Zung Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS). The results showed that the two-factor model for CPSS-14 was a better fit than the one-factor model. The composite reliability of the two factors were higher than .80 and all standardized factor loadings were statistically significant, ranging from .514 to .806. Significant correlations were also found between the CPSS-14, SDS and SAS. The CPSS-14 is best conceptualized as being driven by two underlying dimensions of perceived stress and possessed satisfactory internal consistency, acceptable construct validity and good concurrent validity.
