Europe to promote ‘Gigabit Society’ strategy

The FTTH Council Europe held its annual conference last month in Marseille, France. One of the key themesin this conference was the European Commission’s ‘Gigabit Society’ strategy plan for 2020 and 2025.According to the new targets, all citizens should have access speeds above 30Mbps and 50% of citizensshould have access speed above 100Mbps by 2020. By 2025, all the citizens in both rural and urban areasof Europe will be able to have at least 100Mbps broadband speed. In addition, commercial areas, includingall the schools, transport hubs, public services, and digitally intensive enterprises will have Gigabitbroadband access. The plan also said that at least one major city in each EU Member State should have 5Gby 2020. This “Gigabit Society” will largely promote fibre deployments in this region over the next five years.
