This article comments on an innovative case study in Consulting Psychology Journal: Practice and Research, entitled "Transformation to Academic Leadership: The Role of Mentorship and Executive Coaching," by W. Kimryn Rathmell, Nancy J. Brown, and Richard R. Kilburg. The case study offers "a first-person account of the experience of being coached while independently leading a division of hematology and oncology at a highly ranked medical center" (Rathmell, Brown, & Kilburg. 2019,p. 141),and it includes analysis from the coach and the leader's supervisor. The current commentary, by the developer of the role of a trusted leadership advisor (TLA), discusses how the case can be seen as a transition from executive coaching to a TLA relationship. Such a transition requires a steady commitment from the client, superior competencies by the coach,and the establishment of a close working interaction between the two, thereby assuring that momentum and transformation can be attained. The article also suggests that the ethical issues of confidentiality and multiple relationships should be reexamined, especially as they relate to coaching senior leaders.
