How long will your battery last? This is probably the third question asked by the end purchaser after establishing the battery's capacity and price. It is an important one.It determines the value-for-money and fixes the customer's perception of its quality. In all the years I have been in the industry I have never heard the question,"How many cycles will it do?"from anyone other than a battery professional. The end user is not interested in the battery, only in the item that the battery will power. What they want is to work out the cost of running the item,be it a forklift truck,an electric car,or a standby power array. Those of us in the industry are then obliged to find out the operating parameters of the application,be it one,two or three cycles per day,the depth-of-discharge,the recharge time available and the calculated SoC of the battery during its (hopefully) long life. Then, using catalogue data,we should be able to make a reasonable prediction of calendar or service life, based on how the battery is used. With this information, the customer can make their evaluation of the cost effectiveness of the battery in question.
