Sting vibrations in hypersonic wind tunnel data are investigated and modeled to show how pressure fluctuations are affected. This is in contrast with lower-speed flow where the sting's resonant frequencies are simply superimposed upon the data, leading to their simple removal, either with notch (band-stop) filtering or long-run averaging. The fundamental flow alteration at hypersonic velocities, as demonstrated in this paper, show post-processing noise removal is likely no longer trivial. This paper presents results for Mach 5 flow over 3D right circular cones and a capability to simulate these phenomena using the mesh-free Lagrangian Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method.
