The main purpose of this paper is to describe an operation for the removal of haemorrhoids based on anatomical study of the component parts of a haemorrhoid and of the related muscles. Though, embryologically, the rectum and anal canal join at the level of the valves of Morgagni-the anocutaneous line-it is suggested for clinical reasons and for purposes of description that the junction of the anus and the rectum may be regarded to correspond with the easily identified anorectal ring.
