VOC Reductions Drive U.S. Regulatory Initiatives

David Darling, vice president of Health, Safety and Environmental Affairs at the American Coatings Association, gives an overview on the most important regulations. In the United States, state and local air quality agencies are pursuing lower Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) coating products as they attempt to meet existing and future federal and state clean air program requirements. Regions currently revising their Architectural and Industrial Maintenance (AIM) VOC regulations include California, Colorado and the Northeast states comprising the Ozone Transport Commission (OTC). In addition, California's South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) is considering elimination of the VOC-exempt status for several compounds in the future.
