It's always interested me that scientific research is the one profession where a work-life balance seems to take a back seat. Some of the advice I've seen published from senior researchers includes: 'Life at the top doesn't get easier or more relaxing', 'You must work long hours and hard at it' and 'You may have to make sacrifices'. This sort of advice may reap short-term benefits, and help achieve some short-term career goals, but it may also have negative consequences. A quick Google search led me to a number of major studies demonstrating how a poor work-life balance can lead to high stress and anxiety, poor interpersonal relationships, loss of motivation and ultimately poor performance at work.
