Dr Gwen Lawrie MRACI CChem is a senior lecturer in the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences (SCMB) at the University of Queensland (UQ) and also the Director, First Year Chemistry. She gained a BSc (Applied Chemistry, Hons) from Sheffield Hallam University (UK) in 1986 and a PhD from Cranfield University (UK) in 1990. Having held research-only appointments at UQ between 1991 and 2005, Dr Lawne pursued her growing interest in how students acquired and applied their conceptual understanding (after supervising many research students who held basic misconceptions). Completing a Graduate Diploma in Education (UQ) in 2006, and teaching in high schools in 2007, Dr Lawrie commenced her current teaching-focused appointment at UQ in 2008.
