Different cultures around the world associated the lights with omens, animal spirits, battles between dragons, or flashing shields of mythical warriors. The glowing curtains can extend for thousands of kilometers across the sky. You might have heard the lights in the north and south referred to as aurora borealis and aurora austra-lis, after the Roman goddess of dawn, Aurora, and the gods of the north and south winds, respectively. Many simply call them the northern and southern lights.
