Single shoots of G. rothschildiana cv. O'Brien Red Dark taken from aseptically-grown shoot clusters were cultured at 22鳦 under a 16-h photoperiod on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 6% of sucrose and different concentrations of flurprimidol (0.2, 1, 5 mg/litre) or paclobutrazol (0.01, 0.1, 1 mg/litre). The shoots were incubated for 12 weeks and then the number of tubers per explant, fresh weight and length of microtubers were recorded. Flurprimidol (0.2-1 mg/litre) and paclobutrazol (0.01-1 mg/litre) were effective in inducing tuberization. The highest total fresh weight of tubers was achieved on the medium containing 0.2 flurprimidol/litre. Flurprimidol at 5 mg/litre inhibited elongation of shoots and strongly reduced tuber formation. Growth retardants caused sprouting of tubers and 1 mg flurprimidol/litre was the most efficient in promoting this process.
