Nuclear science and technology has been playing a vital role in civilian life and defense efforts. Utilization of atomic energy for peaceful purposes and such atomic energy which has given considerable impetus to research and development activities are now extended for application to industry. Some of the efforts include sterilization of food to preserve it and synthesis of biodegradable detergentsConventional food treatments have been replaced with new technologies due to changes in food consumption habits, increasing strict demand for higher quality, safe products and increasing awareness of negative effects of the use of chemicals.
