What a difference a year makes. Last year in this space, I wrote about the U.S. auto industry, using phrases such as "obviously, U.S. automakers are struggling mightily," and "parts suppliers are struggling," and "(there is) pervasive gloom in U.S. auto manufacturing." Today, not so much. In fact, the industry's prospects appear brighter than they have in years. After huge losses, massive cutbacks and two bankruptcies stage-managed as part of a federal bailout of General Motors and Chrysler Group, the clouds have parted. It's not exactly sunny yet, but just the lack of a downpour feels pretty good.
