The production of automobile camshafts usually involves long runs of identical parts machined on dedicated machines. Making high-performance, aftermarket cams is a different story, though. One company that knows this well is COMP Cams Inc., Memphis, Tenn. It designs and produces power-boosting valve-train components for builders of racecar engines and street-performance enthusiasts. While OEMs make thousands of cams a day, COMP Cams may make only 300, in batches of one to 15.
