A study was conducted to demonstrate improvement of sound insulation performance of multilayer windows by using microperforated panel. The application of microperforated panel (MPP) to sound insulation problems was treated in a more fundamental and realistic manner where the sound insulation was achieved by perforating the conventional window structure. The possibility of improving the sound insulation performance and upgrading the sound insulation rating of multilayer windows by using MPPs was discussed. An improvement in the sound insulation performance was observed in the mid-frequency range by perforating the glass on the transmitted side and the effect of resonance in the range of 400 1,000 Hz was prevented. The method of perforating the acrylic panel on the transmitted side was considered to be an effective sound insulation design approach on the basis of the above results.
