IREPAS: Turkey’s steel exporters hope for quotas instead of tariffs in US

Facing the narrowing business opportunities in the global market, Turkish steel suppliers continue to adjust to changes in the trade fows, fghting for their place in the sun and trying to regain lost markets, such as the US. While the prospects of large-scale return to American market are quite ephemeral for Turkey, the steel exporters hope that some wider sales options will be available there if the current talks between the countries end successfully, Metal Expert has learnt on the sidelines of the IREPAS autumn meeting held in Dusseldorf on September 22-24.The stiff protectionism race, which was pioneered by the US last year, shook the deep-seated state of things in global trading. “It is clear that the protectionism is now in fashion,” Murat Cebecioglu, Chairman of IREPAS, pointed out. The limited room for shipments into the US and Europe as a result of tariffs and quotas prompted the mills to hunt for opportunities, testing deeper waters on non-key outlets. Asia is now in focus as Turkey is trying to take away some markets from the Chinese suppliers. At the same time, such situation may be temporary, since competition will become much tougher with the growing Chinese investments in Southeast Asian assets.
