Since the development of plant and crop transformation technologies in the mid-1980s, a number of major breakthroughs in plant biology have provided the basis for modern plant biotechnology. At the disposal of modern plant biologists are the complete genomes of several plants, and substantial collections of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) and genetic marker systems. The genomics revolution has led to new approaches to gene discovery and additional new technologies are being developed every day. Such immense technological developments and knowledge acquisition are in stark contrast to the snail's pace at which new plant biotechnologies are approved by regulatory oversight agencies and new products are adopted by certain consumers.
