According to three sources familiar with the decision, the Trump administration will deny the dozens of requests for retroactive small refinery exemptions(SREs)to past Renewable Fuel Standard(RFS)compliance. The sources reported Trump's fear that issuing the SREs could cut into his support ahead of the Nov.election as the main factor driving the decision. The EPA did not immediately comment.A US biofuels coalition including the Renewable Fuels Association and the National Corn Growers Association,on the other hand, seemed happy to comment. The coalition issued a statement that read,"Now,more than ever, our nation's farmers and ethanol producers are counting on the RFS to provide market stability and certainty during an incredibly difficult and tumultuoilS time."The President of US refining lobby group the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers,Chet Thompson, countered that the RFS causes"disproportionate economic harm"to smaE refineries and indicated the currently difficult business environment means those refineries need relief in the form of SREs.
