The World Health Organization is now calling for diagnostic stewardship' -clincians using microbiological diagnostics to guide their prescribing decisions-as one solution to the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) -the ability of previously-sensitive microorganisms to resist the effects of an antimicrobial agent - is a growing problem. In 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that we could be moving into a post-antibiotic era where even minor injuries could lead to life-threatening infections. This could put the future of our whole healthcare system in jeopardy, putting an end to complex surgery and returning us to an era where childbirth is high risk.
