In his review, published on 5 February 2016, Lord Carter tasked pharmacy departments in acute NHS trusts in England with making ￡800m in savings by 2020 (see Panel 2). The review highlighted variations among hospitals in the number of prescribing pharmacists and the total cost of pharmacy and medicines. To address this, Lord Carter laid out a series of targets, emphasising the need for a greater focus on clinioal roles for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
