This is the anatomy of an outbreak of a "mystery illness" on the McMinnville, OR, high-school football team in August 2010. McMinnville is a town (population 32,000) near Salem. Its football team won only one game in 2009. A new head coach with long experience in football came to town in 2010. In mid-August, he invited the team to live with coaches in the gym for a week, an "immersion camp" for football and team-building exercises. Such camps were a tradition at the Los Angeles high school where he had coached just prior to McMinnville.
