THERE is an intriguing story developing as we go to press - a chance Twitter exchange between two tech billionaires could conceivably resolve an energy crisis affecting South Australia, and inspire the use of energy storage technology around the world. The story began with Australian software billionaire Michael Cannon-Brookes picking up on a claim by a Tesla executive that the company's battery division could solve the Australian state's power woes inside 100 days (see p8). Cannon-Brookes tweeted Tesla owner Elon Musk, asking how serious the claim was and if he could arrange the funding and smooth through the politics, could Musk deliver 100 MW of storage in 100 days.
