Having designed the Style 153 implant with McGhan Medical in the late 1980s, I am in a unique position to comment on this article and put into perspective the historical importance of this implant, as well as the challenges surgeons and manufacturers alike face in attempting to improve options and outcomes in women's health in the regulatory environment of this era. In 1985,I initiated the concept of texturizing the outer surface of tissue expanders for use in breast reconstruction. These devices were successful in creating compliant pockets following mastectomy into which breast implants could be placed. Today, virtually all tissue expanders used in breast reconstruction have textured surfaces.
